CBD Oil

CBD oil is by far one of the most popular methods for consuming cannabidiol. Its ease-of-use, versatility, and potency make it ideal for those seeking the supportive qualities of CBD. If you’ve been searching for a comprehensive guide to oil – this is it.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is an extract of cannabinoids that focuses explicitly on cannabidiol. Oil is derived from hemp because it does not contain high levels of THC. Instead, hemp plants contain a significant concentration of CBD, which makes them the ideal solution for producing this supportive cannabinoid in large amounts.

How is CBD Oil Made?

CBD oil is made in a number of ways; however, there are specific techniques that are better than others. Prior to the regulated CBD industry, many oil producers were still utilizing butane as their primary extraction solvent.

Now, many professional extraction facilities utilize supercritical CO2 extraction machines. Another method is by using ethanol, a simple alcohol compound.

In terms of CO2 extraction, technicians place large amounts of hemp flowers into a chamber within the CO2 extraction machine. This chamber is then flooded with supercritical CO2 that’s been turned into liquid due to the high pressure and temperature.

The liquid CO2 acts as a solvent by stripping the hemp flowers of their trichomes. Trichomes are the sticky resin glands found on hemp flowers, and they contain all cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Once this process is complete, the extraction chamber is then evacuated to separate the plant material from the liquid extract. Once separated, the temperature is increased to boil out the remaining CO2 in the CBD extract.

As the CO2 is boiled off, the condensate is moved to a separate vessel where it’s reaccumulated for future use. This is known as a closed-loop-system because the solvent is recycled for later use.

Once complete, the vessel that contains the liquid CBD is depressurized to ensure that there isn’t any residual CO2 solvent left. Once complete, the oil is sent to be lab-tested to ensure that it’s free from residual solvents or any other impurity.

What Type of Oils Are There?

There are three distinct types of oil that you need to understand to make the best decision for your needs. Let’s take a look at the three and how they differ from each other.

#1 Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

Full-spectrum oil is the least processed type of cannabidiol oil. Full-spectrum oil contains everything that naturally occurs within the hemp flower. This means that full-spectrum CBD oil contains CBD, CBN, CBG, and, you guessed it, THC (albeit in trace amounts).

However, all CBD products in the United States and abroad abide by the 0.3% THC threshold or less. This means that although there is THC in full-spectrum oils, it’s insignificant and won’t produce a psychoactive high.

Therefore, the main takeaway that you need to understand regarding full-spectrum CBD oils is that they contain all cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Compared to the other types of CBD oils, they are the least processed since the cannabinoids don’t have to be separated.

#2 Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad-spectrum CBD is similar to full-spectrum oil; however, there’s a glaring difference. Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains all cannabinoids – except THC.

Broad-spectrum oil is produced by isolating the THC compound through the manipulation of heat. All cannabinoids have specific boiling points, and extract technicians use this aspect to single out the THC compound.

However, producing broad-spectrum oil is an extra step compared to full-spectrum oil, which may result in an increased cost to the consumer.

The key takeaway regarding broad-spectrum CBD oil is that it contains all cannabinoids except THC, terpenes, and flavonoids that naturally occur on the hemp variety that’s extracted.

#3 CBD Isolate Oil

CBD isolate oil is a very particular type of oil because it undergoes a series of purification steps to ensure that the only active ingredient is cannabidiol. Extract technicians accomplish this feat by manipulating the temperature of each cannabinoid, terpene, and flavonoid that isn’t CBD.

The end result is by far the purest form of oil available that’s infused into a natural oil, such as hemp seed oil or coconut oil.

The Entourage Effect

One of the most interesting aspects of oil is the entourage effect. It’s the idea that each cannabinoid, terpene, and flavonoid work together to synergistically provide the supportive effects that are experienced with oil.

In-depth research shows that cannabinoids other than CBD, along with terpenes, play a significant role in the effects experienced while consuming oil products.[1] In the case of the three different types of oils – full-spectrum oil would technically benefit the most from the entourage effect since nothing is removed from the extract.

However, that doesn’t take away from the inherent supportive qualities that CBD shows, according to various research studies.

A prime example of CBD operating on its own to trigger significant supportive qualities is through its interactions with the TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid), PPARs (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor), and the CB1 receptor in the endocannabinoid system.

Each of these three compounds or systems are activated indirectly or directly by CBD, thus regulating anxiety and fear-related issues.[2]

How Do You Use Oil?

CBD is by far one of the easiest and straightforward methods when consuming CBD-infused products.

The vast majority of oil products are mixed with a carrier oil to create simple serving sizes. Typically, the carrier oil within CBD tinctures is hemp seed, olive, coconut, avocado, and grapeseed.

Depending on the total amount of active CBD extract within the CBD oil, you will use a small applicator to pull out the desired amount. Check the directions on your oil and follow them. If this is your first time, you may benefit from trying a half-serving.

Once ready, simply place the applicator above or below your tongue and empty out the liquid. Voila! You’ve just consumed your first serving of oil.

In general, the effects of oil are felt within 15-45-minutes.

What Issues Does Oil Help to Support?

Oil is a highly concentrated extract of CBD and other cannabinoids, which means it’s ideal for assisting various mental and physical issues.

These include

As you can see, oil can be used to support various mental and physical issues. This does not mean that CBD is meant as a cure, but rather as a supplement to be used in conjunction with other healthy habits, such as daily exercise and a nutritious diet.

There’s no better time than now to dive into the world of oil to experience their supportive effects. However, it’s always recommended that you seek lab-tested oils to ensure they do not exceed 0.3% THC and are free of residual chemicals.
